In 2023, France set a new record for solar energy, with 3,135 MW of installed capacity connected to the grid, marking a significant increase of 30% compared to 2022. In the last quarter of the year, Enedis, the electricity distribution network operator, recorded the addition of 921 MW of new solar capacity. This performance exceeds the results of 2021, the previous record year with 2.8 GW connected.
The data also reveals positive momentum in terms of individual solar installations, with more than 200,000 new installations added to the grid in 2023, double the number in the previous year. Solar self-consumption, both with and without injection, represents 1,122 MW, equivalent to around one-third of all connections. The self-consumption photovoltaic park has almost doubled in one year to reach 2,256 MW, with a notable concentration in departments such as Haute-Garonne, Isère, and Gironde.
Collective self-consumption also recorded significant growth, with 259 active operations, bringing together 3,839 participants and a total installed capacity of 17,991 kVA. On average, each operation has around two producers and 13 consumers.
The Enerplan union highlights the diversification of players involved in self-consumption, highlighting the growing participation of individuals, businesses, and industries, particularly in the segment of installations exceeding 100 kVA.
Daniel Bour, president of Enerplan, welcomes the 2023 results and predicts an increase in performance in 2024, anticipating a target well above 4 GW thanks to the law on accelerating renewable energies. He stresses the importance of confirming this momentum in future energy planning objectives, highlighting the predominant growth of solar energy in the French electricity mix.
